Default eBow - who use them ?

Just curious to see who is using these !

And do you use any other FX while you use the eBow ?

Anyone ?

i've had one since 1996, but only toyed with it a bit after first getting it. mine is black plastic, not the original metal ones. i'm not sure when they changed over.

anyhoo - i was disappointed that i had to turn my volume down in order to use it. it creates a signal that is so strong that the volume must be turned down. kind of makes quick switching between regular playing and E-bow playing pretty awkward.

but i only fooled around with it for a coupla hours...i'm sure i could find something to do with it, but as i mentioned on the other Effects thread, i hardly ever use effects. too tedious. i like one volume, one tone for the same reasons...but i'm beginning to re-think that last one.

but if i remember it right, my guitar on 10 had to be turned down to about 4.

I mess around with it every so often. I can do a pretty convincing tremolo and some cool swells with it, but I'm still no pro (sometimes, the sounds that come out still surprise me). I like to use it for multitracking and for making chords do things that they usually wouldn't do.

I've always wanted to use it on a fretless guitar like this guy.

Tried one once.

I think of them in the same way I think of a Talkbox: cool effect and fun to play with, but I would probably just use it as a toy instead of a real useful part of my rig.

I want one just to fool around with. Here's why:

I'm very impressionable... I want a Lake Placid Blue Telecaster, too.

All the time..I have an original chrome one, as well as a newer grey one. I use it with some delay, with the tone rolled down on the guitar- then I loop it. It is fun to build chord changes out of single notes...also cool for atmospheric background stuff. I really love them.

I've used mine for quite a few recordings. Here's a YouTube demo I did using the E-Bow with delay and a volume pedal.

And here's a song that was on my solo album from 2008 that uses the combination of E-Bow and slide.

I use mine a lot with a volume pedal and delays/chorus for swells and such. It's one of the newer grey ones.

I used to gig with one - used it on one song of our set.

If I wasn't gigging, I would never have one. In fact, I got rid of it for that reason.

Clueless YouTube Response of the Week

Geoff:

I love "I'll Be Fine" - it's a great example of how the eBow can be used to create "real" music, not just spacey effects. Also, "you" really come through on this tune - I can hear that you were influenced by Jeff Beck, without hearing your Jeff Beck influences. You've really pulled off that illusive final step, at which many otherwise brilliant guitarists fail miserably; completely homogenizing your influences and creating your own unique voice.

And now, back to out topic: When you're playing slide melodies on just one string, how hard is it to keep the other strings out of the picture? Is the eBow pretty selective about driving "the" string, or do you have to do a lot of damping?

actually, it's the other way around. there's a groove that the string fits into and i found it hard to jump to OTHER strings because of it. but then i only fooled with it for a coupla hours.

but now i'm curious...i might pull it out and try to do some thangs.

imagine my disappointment when i found out just last year that "Don't Fear The Reaper"'s sustained note (coming out of the solo) is an E-bow.

The E-Bow does have a narrow focus - one string at a time. That's part of the reason I went for a Sustainiac driver instead. However, that rattles all the strings at once, which means you have to mute the unwanted strings with one finger (or more) while your other fingers fret the notes you want.

They're neat effects, but an ideal setup IMO would be a Sustainiac driver (to free up your picking hand) with some way to dynamically select the string/strings being acted upon (like a pedal that panned the driver's function from E to E, or some way to make it cover as many or as few strings as you like without removing your hands from the guitar).

Thank you Rich, that's a fine compliment. that's certainly one of the main criteria for the guitar players I like, that they have blended their influences and emerged with their own expression. If I am doing that to some extent, then I would take it as an encouraging sign that I'm on the right track. I really appreciate you taking the time to make that comment.

As for the E-Bow, as post toastie mentioned, there is definitely a focus on just the one string, but the slide does tend to rattle the other strings around. To be honest, my slide technique is pretty scrappy under a microscope, and the guys I've seen who can really nail slide playing (SDUGF's own Kirk L'Orange, for example) generally have a solid damping technique behind the slide. Mine is more of a 'clench your butt cheeks and hope for the best' style, but with the E-Bow hammering the crap out of that one string and so much focus on it, I'm able to get away with it.
